Post War 1945-Today
The rush to replace war damaged buildings resulted in frugal designs and many near identical brick houses and tower blocks of flats. Doors, windows, stairs and some walls were often factory made and assembled on site. Much of this is now recognized as a poor answer to the social need and some were structurally unsound.
During the 1970’s people became interested in the conservation of older buildings as well as a greater interest and variety in the design of new property, and consideration of the environment.
Councils now have tighter controls over building and planning to ensure that new developments are to a high standard and environmentally pleasing.
